Swine Flu

Trafford Council recognises that residents and others may have concerns about the current outbreaks of swine flu.

We are following the guidance from the Department of Health, World Health Organisation and the Health Protection Agency. We are also working closely with our healthcare partners to ensure that we monitor the situation and respond effectively should a local outbreak occur.

We would ike to emphasise:

The NHS message "catch it, bin it, kill it" will help prevent spread of infection:

  • Catch it: Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your coughs or sneeze
  • Bin it: Bin the tissue
  • Kill it: Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly

If you have flu-like symptoms and are concerned that you may have swine flu

Please do not go to your doctor's surgery or hospital, as you may spread the disease.

Stay at home and check your symptoms by calling 0800 1 513 513 or go to the National Pandemic Flu Service website: www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk

You should call your GP directly if:

  • You have a serious underlying illness
  • You are pregnant
  • You have a sick child under one year old
  • Your condition suddenly gets much worse
  • Your condition is still getting worse after seven days (or five days for a child)

The National Pandemic Service (NPS)

The National Pandemic Service will assess your symptoms and, if required, provide an authorisation number, which can be used to collect antivirals from a local Antiviral Collection Point.

This service is only for people with high temperature and other symptoms which are likely to be caused by swine flu.

You can get more information about flu symptoms from www.nhs.uk and the Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513.

If you have severe symptoms which are not like flu you should contact your GP or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 in England, NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24 in Scotland or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 4647.

The National Pandemic Service can be accessed online at www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk or by telephone on 0800 1 513 100.
