Licence - Sports Grounds

The Safety at Sports Grounds Act 1975 came into force on 1st September 1975 and required all designated sports stadia with a capacity of more than 10,000 spectators to be issued with a General Safety Certificate.

This capacity was reduced on 25th March 1996 to 5,000 spectators for all sports stadia in which association football is played and which is occupied by a club that is a member of the Football League Limited or the Football Association Premier League Limited.

The Act places a duty and responsibility on the local authority for the issue of a General Safety Certificate to all stadia as designated, who may include in the Certificate such terms and conditions as they deem necessary to ensure spectator safety within the stadium.

All such designated sports stadia should apply for a General Safety Certificate to the local authority. Applications are brought before the Safety at Sports Grounds Advisory Group where it will be determined.

Fees are determined based upon the amount of officer time required to process the application.
