Licence - Motor Salvage Operator

Registration of Motor Salvage Operators is required under PART 1 of the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001- Regulation of Motor Salvage Operators.

The business of a Motor Salvage Operator is one that consists:

  • Wholly or partly in the recovery for re-use or sale of salvageable parts from motor vehicles and the subsequent sale, or other disposal for scrap, of the remainder of the vehicles concerned;
  • Wholly or mainly in the purchase of written-off vehicles and their subsequent repair and re-sale;
  • Wholly or mainly in the sale or purchase of motor vehicles which are to be the subject (whether immediately or on a subsequent re-sale) of any of the activities mentioned in the paragraphs above.

Under S7 of Part 1, traders are required to keep records of all vehicles that are received or deposed of.

Records may be kept in either electronic or manual form. They must be kept at the registered place of business and kept for a period of six years from the date of the last entry on the record for each vehicle.

The fee for registration or renewal of registration is £70.00

Registration expires after a period of three years from the date of registration. A newly completed application form must be submitted to the local authority two months prior to the expiry of the current registration, together with the required fee.
