About Food Premises registration

Registration of premises used for a food business (including market stalls, delivery vehicles and other moveable structures) is required by law. Registration will allow Trafford Council to keep an up-to-date list of all those premises in their area so they can visit them when they need to. The frequency of the visits will depend on the degree of risk involved.

Find out more about registration

Who needs to register?

If you run a food business in Trafford, you must tell us about any premises you use for storing, selling, distributing or preparing food. Food premises include restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops supermarkets, staff canteens, kitchens in offices, warehouses, guest houses, delivery vehicles, buffet cars on trains, market and other stalls, hot dog and ice cream vans etc.

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by the local authority or the Meat Hygiene Service, rather than be registered. If you are uncertain whether your business needs to be approved or registered, contact us using the details at the bottom of the page.

Telling us about any changes

Once you have registered you only need to notify us if the business closes, of a change of food business operator, or if the nature of the business changes. The new food business operator will have to complete an application form.

What happens next?

Once you have submitted your application form your details will be placed on the register and we will acknowledge receipt within 14 days. If you do not hear from us please contact us using the contact details at the bottom of the page.

You can do this online here if you applied through the UK Welcomes service.

What if I have been refused registration?

Any person aggrieved by a refusal to be granted a registration should contact us using the contact details below.

Consumer complaints

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the service provider by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice or you can contact us directly. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.
