The Mayor of Trafford - Councillor Stephen Adshead
I was born in February 1959, and lived locally in Stretford, attending St. Ann's RC Infants & Junior school and St Mary's RC secondary school in Stretford. After leaving school I joined the armed forces and enlisted in the Royal Signals. After completing my training at Catterick in north Yorkshire I was posted to Herford in Germany. Here I spent a few years and was based mainly in the Quarter Masters store, where I was fully trained in all aspects of logistics and stores work. As
well as the military work you were encouraged to take up sports and I particularly enjoyed learning to ski.
After leaving the Army I continued to use my training in logistics and worked for an engineering supplies company in Trafford Park, GEC and the BBC. I began my present post at Trafford General Hospital over ten years ago, where my role is to help keep all the Wards and departments fully supplied with anything and everything they need. I enjoy this position, and am very proud to work within the National Health Service. Trafford General was the first Hospital to be created under the NHS, then known as Park Hospital, and to be associated with it gives me an immense sense of pride
My father was born in Ludlow, Shropshire where his family owned and ran a timber business. After leaving school he worked as a stoker on steam trains before coming to Manchester to work in engineering; this is where he met my Mother who came from north Manchester.
I was first elected onto Trafford Council in May 1986 and was the youngest member of Council at that time. I have represented Stretford ward ever since, and have been proud to serve the people of my neighbourhood. I have had the pleasure of working with many different people in this role. During my time in office I have been honoured to be appointed to numerous positions including those of Chair, Vice-Chair, Labour Spokesperson, Labour Group secretary and Group Whip. I currently have the portfolio for Opposition Spokesperson for Technical Services, which is a particular interest of mine. I am also treasurer of my Constituency party. I enjoy serving as a governor on St. Ann's school, and I am also a member of the Stretford Town Centre Partnership, Trafford Housing Trust and a number of local Parks Groups and residents associations.
In my spare time I love going to the cinema, and am considered knowledgeable about all modern films by my colleagues. When time allows I enjoy relaxing holidays in the Mediterranean, and I have recently been to Bulgaria and Madeira. I like to try and keep fit through swimming and also enjoy reading (when I can find the time). I have a have particular interest in photography going back twenty years and last year had one photograph published by the Messenger.
For the Mayoral Charity this year, the Mayoress Councillor Judith Lloyd and I would like to help purchase medical equipment for the new Trafford Diabetes Centre due to be completed and commissioned in the autumn of 2008. Diabetes is a growing and significant health care issue and this new centre will help bring significant health benefits to Trafford residents who have this condition.
We shall also be supporting the 'Alzheimer's Society'. Alzheimer's is one of the more common causes of dementia which affect mainly older people. It has an effect not only on the sufferer but carers.
The Mayoress, Councillor Judith Lloyd
Councillor Judith Lloyd was born in Sunderland but has lived in Stretford for 33 years. She trained and qualified as a nurse with the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service. Judith was a Clinical Nurse Teacher for the Intensive Care nursing course at Manchester Royal Infirmary. She was a Practice Nurse with a local G.P. surgery and then went to Salford University where she gained a degree in Politics and Contemporary History.
Elected to Council in 1998 she has served a year on the Executive with responsibility for Community Development. Judith served on Scrutiny committees as either Chair or Vice-Chair and is currently Chair of Health Scrutiny and Shadow Spokesperson for Children's Social Service.
Active in the community, Judith is a school governor of a local high school, Chair of Trafford Law Centre Management Committee and Trustee of Trafford Women's Aid and is also Treasurer. She is a member of the board of Genie Networks.
