Community Learning Courses
We aim to offer high quality, short courses for adults and families who live or work in Trafford. Courses are funded by The Skills Funding Agency, delivered on behalf of Trafford Council by Trafford College, and take place in local community venues which offer friendly and comfortable surroundings.
What kinds of courses are available?
First Steps - for adults who want to get back into learning. These courses aim to increase your confidence, skills and wellbeing so that you can move forward to further learning opportunities. First Steps courses are free for adults who have few or no qualifications (less than 5 GCSEs at grades A - C or equivalent).
Courses take place in a number of local community venues, last for six weeks and can include:
- Beginners Computing
- Healthy Eating
- Confidence Building
- Introduction to Jewellery Making
- Digital Photography
- Arts and Crafts
Personal and Community Development Learning (PCDL) - for all adults whatever their qualification level. These courses provide the opportunity to learn simply for enjoyment, though of course they can also lead on to other things. There is a fee for these courses, charged at a rate of £3.50 per hour for courses starting in September 2010, though fees can be waived for adults who receive certain means tested benefits.
Courses take place in a number of local venues around Trafford and can include:
- Digital Photography
- Flower Arranging
- Spanish
- Cake Decorating
Family Learning - for adults who want to support their children and enhance their own skills. We offer a variety of free short courses in a range of primary schools and children's' centres, designed to help you learn with your child and have fun together at the same time.
Longer courses are also available which allow you to focus on developing your own literacy, language or numeracy skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
Family learning courses include:
- Storysacks
- Little Counters
- Keeping up with the Children
- Healthy Eating on a Budget
- Family Literacy
- Family Numeracy
Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC) - for groups of adults who want to make a difference in their neighbourhood. Working with a Development Worker, learning opportunities are tailored to the needs of the group depending on their focus.
