School Travel Support
Children from low income families
In accordance with the Education and Inspections Act 2006 low income families (defined as those whose children are entitled to free school meals or who are in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit) who are resident in Trafford will be eligible to receive travel assistance to any Trafford secondary school, where the school is more than two or less than six miles away.
An eligible pupil attending a maintained denominational school must be of the same denomination and have continually attended a primary or secondary school of the same denomination.
Eligible pupils may also be entitled to travel assistance to maintained denominational schools outside the Trafford area where appropriate provision is not available within Trafford and where the school is between two and fifteen miles away.
Applications must be resubmitted annually. If your circumstances have changed your child may no longer be eligible to receive travel assistance.
Other children
Trafford residents aged 8 or older, but not older than pupils in the Year 11 year group, living 3 miles or more from the zoned primary or secondary school or where Trafford is unable to offer a school place that is less than 3 miles from the child's home, will be eligible to receive travel assistance.
Zoned School
The zoned school is the school designated by the LA as serving your area (see the table below)
| Area | Schools |
|---|---|
| Altrincham Area | Altrincham College of Arts, Altrincham Grammar Schools (Boys and Girls), Blessed Thomas Holford, Loreto Grammar School, St Ambrose College and Wellington School |
| Partington Area | Blessed Thomas Holford, Broadoak School, Loreto Grammar School, St Ambrose College Sale Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School |

Pupils attending Denominational Schools
Trafford residents aged 8 or over but not older than pupils in the year 11 year group and living 3 miles or more from the appropriate denominational school will be eligible to receive travel assistance if they are of the same denomination and have continually attended a primary or secondary school of the same denomination.
Pupils will not be entitled to a travel pass if:
- You have chosen to send your child to a different school to the one zoned for your home.
- You have moved to live in Trafford but your child continues to attend a non-Trafford school.
- Your child attends an independent school as a feepayer.
Journey Variance Vouchers
A free travel pass entitles a child to make a single journey to and from school each day. However Journey Variance Vouchers are available from the school. If authorised by the Head and endorsed with the school stamp, these vouchers allow travel pass holders to travel between home and school at other than the usual times. This is to enable the child to take part in after-school activities.
Cycle Allowances
As an alternative to a free travel pass, you may apply for a cycle allowance of £90 each academic year. An application form for this allowance is available on request from the Travel Assistance Team. The child must have successfully completed an accredited programme of road safety training. Parents should be satisfied that the home to school route is within the capabilities of their child and that the cycle is properly maintained. The bicycle should have appropriate lighting and suitable reflective clothing should be worn at all times.
Additional Information
In all cases the measurement used will be the shortest walking distance from home to school calculated through the use of various GIS systems as appropriate.
Applications must be resubmitted annually. If your circumstances have changed your child may no longer be eligible to receive travel assistance.
GMPTE Concessionary Fares
Even if your child does not qualify for free travel within the terms of Trafford's policy, (e.g. a pupil over 16 but attending school or college) you may benefit from the range of travel concessions for young people funded by Trafford, as part of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. For more information you should contact the GMPTE Passes and Permits Department
