Countryside Conservation
The Mersey Valley
The Mersey Valley extends for about 12 miles in total from the centre of Stockport to the Manchester Ship Canal at Flixton. In 1967 local authorities in these areas formed a unique partnership to seek improvements along the valley.
Since 1974 local authorities and then North West Water (now the Environment Agency) in the valley formed a committee to carry out environmental works along the valley known as the Mersey Valley Joint Committee. The Committee is made up of representatives from Trafford, Manchester City Council and the Environment Agency.
The Joint Committee employs the Mersey Valley Countryside Warden Service to manage, maintain and develop the valley, they do this by:
- Carrying out access management works including path surfacing, providing signs, gates and boardwalks.
- Carrying out works on woodlands, including tree planting, coppicing and tree surgery as part of a sustainable woodlands products initiative.
- Habitat works including creating ponds and species rich grasslands.
- Clear litter and fly tipping.
- Patrol site on a regular basis.
