Building and Landscape Design Services

Good design is concerned with all the practical aspects of building design; soundness of construction, energy conservation, drainage, access, car parking, daylight and over-shadowing for instance, as well as quality of appearance. But well designed buildings can enrich our surroundings and cultural life. The sections below provide outline information for assisting with good planning design:

Designing out Crime -The Council is obliged under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to consider the crime and disorder implications of all planning applications. Crime and security issues can be material considerations in the determination of planning applications. This section explains the policies and principles for planning out crime.

Exterior Lighting - This information is to help you understand when planning permission for external lighting will be needed and to give some advice on what the planning considerations are to help those who need to make an application.

Urban Design - Attractive and lively buildings, streets, parks and neighbourhoods, especially those with a mixture of compatible uses and historic character, all contribute to making the area a special place which is a pleasure to live in. The quality of our surroundings is also now recognised as a vital factor in attracting and retaining businesses, employers and tourists. This section outlines policies and principles for new development and urban design.
