What is the Unitary Development Plan?

The Unitary Development Plan is the document that sets out the Council's Policies and Proposals for how land is to be used and developed in the Trafford area over the next 15 to 20 years.

The UDP seeks to ensure that:

  • There is enough land available to build the new homes that are needed
  • There is enough land available to attract new businesses needed to provide employment for local people
  • The right environment is created to enhance business efficiency, competitiveness and job creation.
  • The transport system is improved to provide a greater choice in the way people and freight can move around
  • Local communities are provided with a range of good quality open space, leisure, recreation and other community facilities
  • Valuable countryside areas are protected from development

The UDP is important because:

  • It gives developers and local people a clear idea of the types and amount of development that will or will not be acceptable in particulars parts of the Borough for the foreseeable future
  • It provides the framework within which the Council makes its decisions on the many planning applications that are submitted for consideration each year

Status of the Unitary Development Plan

The Council formally adopted the Revised Trafford Unitary Development Plan on the 19 June 2006. The final Notice of Adoption was published by the Council on the 26 June 2006.

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act (2004) established a new system for the preparation of Development Plans for local authority areas. The Trafford Core Strategy is the principal document within the Trafford LDF and sets the vision, spatial strategy and policies for development in the Borough up to 2026. The Core Strategy was formally adopted at Full Council on the 25 January 2012 and it now forms part of the Development Plan for Trafford. It is important to note that the Core Strategy partly replaces, and in some cases entirely replaces, content within the Revised Trafford Unitary Development Plan (UDP) (as saved by the Secretary of State in 2007 and 2009). Amendments have also been made to the Proposals Map as a result of the adoption of the Core Strategy and these are set out in Appendices 1 and 4 of the adopted Core Strategy.

It is now necessary to read the Adopted Core Strategy and the Revised Trafford UDP in conjunction with one another. Appendix 5 of the Core Strategy provides a schedule detailing those UDP policies replaced or partly replaced by the Core Strategy.
