How to get help

Getting help could not be easier. There are many access points to support and treatment through national helplines and local agencies.

If someone in your family has a problem with drugs or alcohol, you can also get information about agencies which will be able to support and advise you.

National Helplines

Helplines and agencies are available for free confidential drug & alcohol information and advice 24 hours a day for you, your family and your friends.

Accessing services

Treatment services in Trafford offer an open-access policy, which means that you can contact them directly and they will arrange an appointment with you. Some agencies offer a drop-in service where you can access a duty worker at set times without an appointment.

You can also request a referral from non substance specific services or alternativly you can also speak to your GP who will be able to help or refer you to a specialist agency.

Treatment services generally have short waiting lists and provide quick access to initial treatment and support.

Is there a charge for services?

Services in Trafford commissioned by the Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) are free at the point of contact for service users.

Types of services available include

  • Information and advice -Advice and information services provide factual information on drugs and alcohol misuse and the options for treatment.
  • Harm Reduction -Services that primarily fulfil a substance-related harm reduction function of advice, information and interventions around blood borne viruses and injecting.
  • Prescribing - Provision of a medically supervised substitute to an illicit misuser to maintain and reduce use.
  • Counselling and day care provision - Counselling with trained and experienced counsellors or a place at a day care facility with support. This will be confidential and will aim to help you to work towards ot remain drug or alcohol free.
  • Criminal Justice Interventions -Individuals accessing drug treatment services may have done so as a result of engagement in a criminal justice intervention.
  • Detoxification - Help to safely manage withdrawal from drugs or alcohol in a home or inpatient environment with support and counselling.
  • Residential rehabilitation - Following detoxification, if care at home is not suitable, a period of care, support and counselling in a residential facility may be arranged.
  • After-care - Access to training, education and ongoing support for people during treatment or upon leaving treatment.
