A biography of a famous person in history?

  • Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - an illustrated database of 50,000 biographies of people who have shaped the history of the British Isles.
  • Who's Who contains over 33,000 short biographies of noteworthy and influential people who are still alive. Who Was Who provides over 100.000 entries from the archives of Who's Who dating back to 1898. It provides a valuable insight into those people who have helped shape events and history across the world.

An artist or painting?

  • Fame - contains detailed information on public and private companies in the UK and Ireland. It is the leading UK company information solution, and highly acclaimed by both users and reviewers. This service is available at Altrincham Library only.
  • Ask About Business brings together a wide range of business information. Use if you are a pre-start or new business, jobseeker, consumer, inventor or business student.
  • Cobra is a comprehensive and practical resource for anyone looking to start a new business, write a business plan or conduct market research. Users will need to enter their borrower number, including the TRP, when logging into the service.

A newspaper article?

  • NewsUK - NewsUK is an online service developed to provide national and regional news, combining the most popular British newspaper titles in one database. If accessing outside Trafford Libraries, you will need to enter your borrower barcode including TRP in capitals.

An old newspaper article?

  • Times Digital - with The Times Digital Archive, researchers now have an unparalleled opportunity to search and view the best-known and most cited newspaper in the world online in its original published context. Every complete page of every issue of The Times (London) from 1785 to 1985, every headline, article and image. Each front page, editorial, birth and death notice, advertisement and classified ad that appeared within the pages of The Times (London) is easily accessible from what is a complete virtual chronicle of history for this period. This service is available at Local Studies and Altrincham Library only.
  • The Guardian from 1821-2003 and The Observer from 1791-2003. Search by keyword for ancestors, companies and events or browse complete digitised editions including images, adverts, obituaries and announcements.
