A biography of a famous person in history?

  • Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - an illustrated database of 50,000 biographies of people who have shaped the history of the British Isles
  • Who's Who contains over 33,000 short biographies of noteworthy and influential people who are still alive. Who Was Who provides over 100.000 entries from the archives of Who's Who dating back to 1898. It provides a valuable insight into those people who have helped shape events and history across the world

An artist or painting?

  • Oxford Art Online - access to the Grove Dictionary of Art and the Oxford Companion to Western Art including 21,000 biographies of artists and over 5,000 images

A composer or a piece of music?

  • Oxford Music Online - access to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the New Grove Dictionaries of Opera and Jazz

The meaning of a word, phrase or crossword clue?

  • Oxford English Dictionary - the online version of the "accepted authority on the meaning, history and pronunciation of the English language". If accessing at home please use this link. You will need to enter your borrower barcode including the TRP before the number.

A company or business information?

  • Ask About Business brings together a wide range of business information. Use if you are a pre-start or new business, jobseeker, consumer, inventor or business student
  • Cobra is a comprehensive and practical resource for anyone looking to start a new business, write a business plan or conduct market research. Users will need to enter their borrower number, including the TRP, when logging into the service

A current or old newspaper article?

  • Combined in this one site 'UK Newsstand' provides local & regional news coverage whilst 'ProQuest Historical Papers: The Guardian (1821-2003) and The Observer (1791-2003)' provides coverage of older articles. The default searches both databases or click on the ‘Historical Newspapers’ icon to search just The Guardian and Observer. If accessing at home you will need to enter your borrower barcode including the TRP in capitals.

Help passing the driving theory test

  • Theory Test Pro contains the entire official test question bank and an online version of the Highway Code. With regular updates from the Driving Standard Agency and realistic hazard perception videos, this resource will get you on the road to passing your test. You will need an email address to sign up for an individual account.
