Wednesday 3 September 2.00pm- Author Leigh Smith will be promoting his new book Norvern Monkey. The book is about the Dacey family who are a severely dysfunctional family unit enjoying great wealth but a violent father drives the children and their mother into harsh Northern poverty. From the raw excitement of an era that spawned the Beatles to the vicious criminal underworld, the North South divide becomes an unbelievable mix of hilarity, sadness and danger for the Norvern Monkey. Tea and biscuits will be served.

Wednesday 17 September 2.00pm - Aspects of Old Urmston by Bill Potts. Bob is a member of Woodsend's Local History Group and has given many talks across the Borough. Tea and biscuits will be served.

Wordfest and Messenger Newspapers short story competition

Short stories are considered by many to be the most perfect form of fiction writing so celebrate National Year of Reading 2008 by writing a short story for others to read and enjoy. Book tokens will be awarded to the winning entries. The competition will be launched on 9 June at the start of wordfest, entries must be sent in by Friday 31 October 2008. For further details download an entry form.

Summer Reading Challenge 2008

Calling all children! Come and join 'Team Read' at any Trafford library from July 14 onwards. It is free to join and as you read books you earn stickers and prizes. Those who have read six books before the end of the challenge on September 15 will get a medal and certificate at a special library party. Visit the Team Read website.

August National Year of Reading events

The theme for August is Read the Game:

  • Be inspired by the start of the Beijing Olympics and read up on all your favourite sporting stars.
  • If you feel the need to be sporty yourself we'll be running activities with Trafford Leisure trust.
  • Children can join in the fun by taking part in the summer reading challenge Read the Game. Read some books and get prizes as you go along.
