Travel Passes

Concesssionary travel passes are available to anyone aged 60 years and over and eligible disabled people living in England. Concessionary travel is also available to children under 16 years of age.

Travel passes for people aged 60 and over

If you are 60 years and over and you have a national concessionary travel pass, you can travel for free on local buses anywhere in England between 9:30am - 11pm Monday to Friday, and all day at weekend and bank holidays.

Before 9:30am you pay the standard concessionary fare in Greater Manchester and the full adult fare outside of Greater Manchester.

Trains and Metrolink

If you live in Greater Manchester you can use your pass to travel free after 9:30am, or for half the standard fare before 9:30am, only if you are travelling within the Greater Manchester area.

Please note: You cannot use your pass on trains and the metrolink outside of Greater Manchester.

Travel passes for disabled people

National concessionary travel pass for disabled people

You may be able to apply for free travel on local buses anywhere in England between 9:30am - 11pm Monday to Friday, and all day weekends and bank holidays. If you visit another part of England you can use your pass to travel on local buses in that area. Before 9:30am, you pay standard concessionary fare in Greater Manchester and the full adult fare outside of Greater Manchester.

You may be eligible for the pass if you:

  • have severe walking difficulties
  • are registered partially sighted
  • are profoudly or severely deaf
  • have been or would be refused a driving licence for medical reasons

Some disabled people may also be eligible for free travel on buses at all times in Greater Manchester.

National travel concession plus pass for disabled people

If you live in Greater Manchester and you are disabled, you may be able to get a Concession Plus pass which allows you to have free travel at all times on buses, local trains and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester, and on local buses elsewhere in England between 9.30am - 11pm Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and public holidays.

With a concession plus pass you can travel for free on all Metrolink trams and on local trains if your journey begins and ends within the Greater Manchester rail boundary.

You may be eligible for this pass if you:

  • are registered blind
  • are profoundly deaf and cannot speak or have limited speech that is difficult to understand
  • have learning disabilities
  • cannot use both of your arms
  • cannot talk
  • are an ex-serviceman or ex-servicewoman with serious walking difficulties as a result of losing a leg
    would be refused a driving licence as a result of severe and long - term mental - health problems

Low fares and free travel for people under 16

Children aged 5 to 15 years

If you are aged 5 to 15 years you pay the concessionary fare on all buses, trains and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester. The concessionary fare is the same no matter how far you travel but the price is different for buses, trains and Metrolink trams.

Children under 5

Children under 5 years, who are travelling with an adult, can travel free on buses and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester. Up to two children under 5 years may travel for free with each fare-paying adult on trains.
