About Speed Humps
The Council receives many requests from residents for traffic calming to be introduced along their roads to reduce vehicle speeds, rat-running and hence improve road safety.
During investigations, the accident statistics for the road/area are also considered.
There are different forms of traffic calming including road humps (such as speed cushions, street end treatments and kerb to kerb round or flat topped road humps) as well as chicanes etc.
All aspects of their design and introduction are covered by guidance issued by the Department for Transport. This includes consultations with the emergency services as well as the public.
