Street Cleaning Programme

The Street Cleaning team of 53 staff is responsible for cleaning over 500 miles of roads and footpaths in Trafford. There are four town centres: Altrincham, Sale, Stretford and Urmston, and over 50 village and neighbourhood shopping centres, most of which are cleaned daily. In addition, the equivalent of another town of 67,000 people arrives on our doorstep, at Manchester United F.C., approximately 25 times a year.

The government targets for street and local environmental cleanliness are measured in terms of two indicators, litter and detritus, graded A-D, where:

A - Is Clean, with no litter, refuse or detritus.

B - Is Light, predominantly free of litter or detritus, except for some small items.

C - Is Significant, with widespread distribution of litter or detritus, with minor accumulations.

D - Has Heavy litter or detritus, with significant accumulations.

Examples of these grades are given with the Output Specification which describes our aims for improving the standards of cleanliness in the Borough. The specification is based on outcomes that are expected by all customers living, working and visiting Trafford.
