History

Victoria Park, Stretford was opened on the 15th November 1902 which is the date showing on the plaque by the magnificent gates leading into the park from the corner of Victoria Road and School Road. These gates were presented to the park to celebrate the reign of Queen Victoria and it must have been a grand unveiling and opening in Stretford.

The park itself was built to replace 'The Rec' which was a football pitch sized area of land on the site of Henshaw Street (very close to Victoria Park's situation today). 'The Rec' came into being around 1890 and had separate playgrounds for boys and girls. We know that the coronation celebrations for Edward VII were held on 'The Rec' on the 26th June 1902 and so presume that Victoria Park must not have been open at this time.
