i think putting sainsburys near the library is good for parking but there might also be a lot of people who will then not walk down from sainsbury's to look at some of the independents are selling , this is evident when i tell you that i go in into Sausalito's coffee shop in the Village , just past Mayfield Ave.. i still meet people that don't know its there after 4 years ..so yes the parking would be an issue at peak times ie saturdays and it is an issue that would have to be solved .The old Hanbury's has change hands a few times so i assume getting people ther eis an issue , there is a rumour that i can't confirm that co-op still own the lease so are unlikely to allow a competitor in there ..,,H

You may find that despite the need to rejuvinate the village, any plans will have to meet with the approval of the Timperley Civic Society who were the main force in opposing the original plans for the old Co-Op

I think Sainsbury's will not be a brilliant idea for Timperley. I'm married to one of the butchers at Treadgolds, who was also a butcher at Ron Gibsons Anyone remember his shop? My hubby went into work one day to be told "Sorry no job for you anymore" he was made redundant after 20+ years of loyal service. I fear the same will happen again. My husband is on a 4 day week again now. Once open a time there were 5 or more butchers shops where did they all go?
The village is not busy enough anymore. It's the attitude of younger shoppers that needs to change that would help improve trade. The younger generation prefer to do all their shopping under one roof. People are on much tighter budgets and live of value brands I'm not ashamed to say us included thank god for B & M's etc. They can't afford small shop prices that are too expensive. I was brought up in Urmston in the 80's & 90's The Trafford Centre came along and killed that village off. Then guess who took over..... Sainsbury's. Traders have become complacent and need to think of ideas to bring trade back into the village before it's too late. Why not try a market type event once a week stalls on the pavement etc? Garstang nr our home does that on a Thursday. Posters in shop windows support your local traders? A discount voucher leaflet posted through local doors with offers from shops in the village. A page advert in the messenger with a section for each shop. |

Why should the attitude of 'youngsters' have to change to suit the old guard!! The situation is now one of convenience and price . Yes Tredgolds do some lovely meat, however it is Very expensive! 5 years ago people used to queue out of the door, I've not seen it like though for some time!!! don't blame the failure of a business on the apathy of the customers, it tends to be the apathy of the owners!!

We shop more and more at Aldi and pick up the few things they don't stock or where they have inferior quality from Tesco. It's a simple case of being on a budget at present, and looking for affordability with reasonable quality rather than paying top whack for something that may be only slightly better As a further example, I popped into the Co-op to pick up a few beers last Friday while I was waiting for Mrs RR to come out of the Post Office and their bottled beer all retails at over £2 for "brown beer" (aka real ale). You can get something similar for around £1.20 - £1.60 in Aldi and even Nisa near us sell 3 bottles for £4 To survive you either have to compete or offer something different that will attract customers from elsewhere, everyone is competing for the same group of shoppers at present until the economy picks up again

I'm not old guard I'm 39 lol. At Treadgolds the meat is sourced locally not shipped in from abroad. It's also of high quality not like supermarkets. Do you know where the meat comes from in Aldi and Tesco's etc, which country, the standard of meat used? If you watched TV last night (Jimmy and the Giant Supermarket, C4) you would have seen that in one supermarket meatball there's DNA from 179 different cows! Does that not put you off?
Treadgolds is not a failing business as you suggest. The whole village is quiet at present. You must not be regular customer then if you've been walking past??? Was it five years ago you last went in? Why not go in and show your support. Five years ago the whole village was different then and people had more money. Have you actually compared prices with a supermarket? I have been told by my husband that chicken fillets are actually cheaper at Treadgolds than the supermarkets and of a much higher quality. The point I was trying to make was supermarkets are not a good thing in small villages. I'm giving my personal opinion as a butchers wife and also coming from a small place myself (Urmston) and seeing it's decline. Treadgolds give excellent personal service and take the time to listen to their customers, which supermarkets don't offer. I think locals should support local businesses all over the country, as one day they all could be gone. |

I walk past Tredgolds every day. The village is quieter, but not to the extent some retailers seem to make out. |

Only 69%? You do surprise me.
People don't know what they are buying including RR apparently. Aldi don't sell "Real Ale" and the Co-op only sell one and that's not on offer very often. |

Apart from the sad demise of Rooks; I think that Timperley Village seems quite bouyant when I go in, which is most Saturdays. Certainly it is more alive than Altrincham.
Tradgolds is always busy, queueing out of the door is common. I must admit, I will use it as the taste of the meat is far superior, I'll buy smaller quantities if necessary. I'm not sure what the effect of a new Supermarket will be? Hopefully it will be possitive. |
