I have lived near to the mothers pride site in Old Trafford all my life(which has now been taken over by Arkady soya mills) and i used to work saturday mornings as a van lad in the 1960s ,then later as a casual worker in the bakery its self.
My father also worked there as a mechanic in the garage (seymore garage) on Ayres road for many years. I can remember it as a very busy bakery, and also remember Craigs Pantry across the road from the bakery before moving to Ayres road. I remember the shops just a little way down skerton road from bakery ,the caf'e,newsagents, bookies and butchers shop, and further along skerton road Pattesons marble works on the corner of tennis street and skerton road,i have some very happy memories of my childhood in old trafford ,very different today,it's not such a nice place to live now..........

I lived on Skerton road from 1951 to 1963. I would work as a Saturday lad for Graigs Pantry and Sunday for Roberts Dairy. Mr Roberts lived at 2 Dean Avenue. 1962 I started as a Saturday lad for Mothers Pride. 1965 I started permanently as a van lad then progressed to driver. I remember only one mechanic by name and he was Freddy Bolt. These were the best days of my life working for Brookes. The shops I remember were Fletchers oposite the bakery, Junction of Ayres Road, Kemps grocers, Harry H Holden paper shop, Burkes green grocers, battys wool shop, Critcherlows cakes shop, Hoylands chippy, Hairdressers where June Richie the actress use to work. I can not remember the butchers name. Horners the Bike shop on Ayres Road were related to mrs Kemp. Dr Fine on Seymour Grove was our GP.

I used to go to Kings Road primary school and Stretford Road boys. Each dinner time I would work at Kings of Oxford Stretford Road with my mates. Drain oil , fuel and wash the motor bikes with some sort of acid that burnt your fingerprints off. We would go to the cafe in the next street. I was quite well off because I worked at Kings of Oxford Monday to Friday dinner time, Mothers Pride as a Saturday lad and Roberts dairy on Sunday and still at school.

I used to live in Lime Grove next to Mothers Pride, I remember all the shops on Skerton Road, had a paper round with Harry Holden and remember when I got my wages on a Sat night I used to get a bag of sweets as well, I remember that I always got more sweets of Harry than his wife. Bought my first bike from Horners, I also remember the hardware shop at the end of the block I used to love the smell in there. At weekends we used to play on the electric float vehicles in the charging shed. Some would say good old days but whilst they were good life is a lot easier now.

I remember Steve Grady, Billy Bullock, and Ricky Woods that lived on Addison Crescent about 1950s to 60s. Anybody remember the blue static police phone box near to the junction of Ayres road. Me and my mate decided to open it and the blue light started flashing. The next second a policeman was asking us what was the emergency, as we were only about 5 or 6 years old he gently slapped us on the back of our heads (still have the bruises)and said he would be round to have a word with our parents that evening. 56 years later he has not been, so long as I keep moving house I will be ok! Joking apart the same bobby used to do school crossing duties at Streford Road boys school. He had won an award as the smartest dressed policeman in the UK. I remember Alan Greenhalch, Alan Grieves, Bob Fitton, and Ronnie Bowers who all lived on Ruthen Lane.
