If the weather forecast was for a clear moonlit evening the Home Guard would load up soot from the factory chimneys in to tipper lorries and shovel it onto the Manchester and Bridgewater Canals as the German Bombers were targeting the Docks. Because the Bombers were in circuit for longer looking for their target made it more dangerous for the German aircrew.
