Who is eligible to apply?

Below are the criteria that are dictated by adoption law and regulation:

  • Anyone wishing to adopt must by law be over 21 years of age
  • Single people, both male and female, can adopt
  • Couples do not have to be married to adopt
  • Same sex couples can adopt
  • Some criminal offences will mean that you will not be eligible to apply
  • If you smoke you will not be considered as an adopter for young children; please refer to our Smoking Policy

In addition to the above, there are other factors that we will take into account in deciding whether you are eligible, these are:

Age

There is no upper age limit, but we need to be sure you will be healthy and active throughout your child's childhood.

Health

For the same reasons you need to be in reasonable health, and you will need to have a medical.

Accommodation

You will need to have enough space in your home for a child to have their own bedroom.

Disability

If you have a disability, we will balance your difficulties against what you have to offer a child, and will take medical advice.

Fertility treatment

We would not accept an application until six months after you last fertility treatment, as adoption needs to be a positive choice for you.

Birth children

If you already have children, you can still apply to adopt. We welcome applications from experienced parents, especially if your children are older or adults. If your children are younger, we need to be sure adoption is right for them.

We need adopters from all sections of the community and we welcome enquires from people of every religion and culture. We do not discriminate on grounds of culture, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation.
