Shut up and beat the burglar

Trafford Police are appealing for residents to beat the burglar by taking a few simple crime prevention steps this summer.

With temperatures rising during the next few months, the temptation is to open windows, leave doors unlocked and spend more time in the garden. However, most burglars are aware of this and are more than prepared to take advantage of any lapses in summertime security.

Eleanor Kelly, Trafford Police's crime reduction advisor said: "We have been doing well to reduce incidents of burglary in Trafford. However, it's easy to make it hard for burglars by simply securing windows and doors. By doing this, Trafford residents can play their part in helping to reduce and avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Up to one in three burglaries across Trafford happen because people leave their windows and doors open so, by opening a window to let in a breeze, you are increasing the chance of an opportunist burglary. In 2008 this means that your belongings could be sold on the Internet to someone across the world in minutes."

The advice to residents is to make sure homes are kept safe and secure this summer. Using a light timer will make it look like someone is home, even if they're not and keeping keys out of sight of windows and doors will help to protect the home.
