Join up for a cleaner, greener Trafford
Residents in Trafford are taking pride in their neighbourhoods - because they want the borough's environment to be cleaner and greener.
Action for Sustainable Living in partnership with Trafford Council has already enrolled volunteers as project managers for eight hours per week, initiating and supporting action in their neighbourhoods.
Solutions
There are seven local project managers active in seven wards across Trafford and four more managers are needed in four wards to help bring about local solutions to issues such as fuel poverty, recycling and climate change.
Laura Gaither, local project manager in Old Trafford, has recently been helping out with the hugely successful 'Pride in our NeighbOURhood', a collaborative effort with partner agencies; Action for Sustainable Living, Trafford Council, Groundwork, M & D Housing, Trafford Housing Trust and Emerge.
Campaign
This encourages residents, schools, businesses and local groups to take collective responsibility for the environment they live and work in. The year long campaign will celebrate high points of Old Trafford and address challenges, such as litter, fly tipping and graffiti.
It launched with an art project opening at Old Trafford football ground. Three hundred and fifty local school children got involved in 'The Big Clean' - a community litter pick.
Activities ranged from a swap or skip for all your unwanted goods, learning about local community projects, listening to local musicians to cycling for a free smoothie!
Another project, called Woodstovefamilies, has delighted five families who received free of charge, clean burning woodstoves which combine affordable warmth and reduced carbon emissions.
Incredible
Husband and wife, Paul and Claire D'Ambra, of Old Trafford, have been impressed with the renewable energy kit. Said Paul: "The solar-water heater is incredible, a hands-down winner. Installation was quick, tidy, finished professionally and it works incredibly well.
"Even in the depths of winter the solar water heater was doing a third of the work that the boiler would have had to do previously, and that has translated into real savings!"
Claire added: "It's changed the way we live, for the better. We are more aware of how our comfort is directly related to the earth's resources."
