Cloverlea goes 'Green'

Winning eco awards is becoming a habit for pupils, staff, governors and parents at Timperley's Cloverlea Primary School. Their latest success is the National Eco-Schools Gold award, which follows lots of work by the school's eco committee and school council on an eco action plan. Committee members Tim Wright and Jodie Gornall, both 11, said they're thrilled with the awards and everyone's involvement.

"It's great to do something for the environment and the earth. Too much is being destroyed, but our school's helping the earth recover," said Jodie.

The school has already taken the £1000 Yellow Pages recycling competition prize and the 2007 Caterpillar Eco Award - reinforcing its green credentials.

The school's actions are extensive: recycling paper, saving electricity - the caretaker takes weekly meter readings - adopting animals and introducing a nature area.

"We're planning to go to Chester Zoo again soon to see the animals we have adopted and find out more about how we are helping them," said Tim.

Not resting on its laurels, the school is already planning to extend the nature area, get brighter compost bins to encourage more to take part and, possibly, introduce bright, frog shaped litter bins.

"We're all thrilled to have achieved so much. But we need to carry on making sure we encourage more people to recycle and save energy. It's great that by working together we are helping save our planet.

"When we go home we make sure our families know what we are trying to do and how they can also help protect the environment," said Tim.

Some of the school's prize money has been used to pay for and erect the flag pole from which their gold award 'green flag' now flies.
