Wade Woodruff, from Partington has enjoyed books since he was born 18 months ago.

He's one of the thousands of toddlers who have benefited from Bookstart in Trafford. Bookstart is a national programme that aims to provide every child in the UK with free books. Parents and carers are encouraged to enjoy books with children from as early age as possible so they have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of books.

And according to birth figures in Trafford, every baby born over the past two years has received the Bookstart pack, 97 per cent of toddlers have got the Bookstart plus pack and all nursery aged children have received treasure chests.

Wade's mum Cassandra is a big supporter: "Using the Bookstart guidance materials reassures you that what you are doing is good for your child. And you get excellent help and support from the libraries".

"Wade really enjoys looking at the pop up books and points to things that he recognises. As soon as I sit down he goes and gets a book for me to talk to him about and look at the pictures.

"When his dad sits down to read a magazine, Wade sits with him and enjoys being shown what is in the magazine."

Cassandra has noticed that Wade's concentration is better and he spends a long time looking at the books and listening to the rhymes which in time will help his vocabulary.

All the Bookstart packs are available from health visitors, libraries, children's centres and groups such as Talkshop. If you would like to know more about this programme please contact Jayne Pellington on 0161 912 5152, email jayne.pellington@trafford.gov.uk or visit our library pages
