New bins for all

Trafford is gearing up for the introduction of an enhanced recycling and waste service due to popular demand from local residents.

From September in a phased roll out across Trafford, the council will be collecting cardboard, drinks cartons, telephone directories and plastic bottles from the kerbside.

Spearheading the new recycling and waste service Executive Councillor Jonathan Coupe said: "Trafford residents were consulted in January and voted overwhelmingly to keep their weekly refuse collections and we have responded to that by keeping it weekly."

Residents will receive a new blue bin for all their paper and card. The existing black bin will be converted into a recycling bin for glass, cans and plastic bottles. The garden waste collection will continue using the green bin.

A new, smaller, grey bin will be provided for the reduced amount of rubbish that can't be recycled. People are being encouraged to recycle more which will help to avoid having over-full bins or extra bags of waste.

Sending rubbish to landfill costs the council millions of pounds every year and this cost is rising year on year.

Recycling and composting rates in Trafford have increased significantly over the past three years, from 10 per cent in 2005 to 28 per cent in 2008.

But there is still more to do. The government has set recycling targets for local authorities to achieve next year and, in Trafford, the council has upped the target to 34 per cent.
