New Metro routes
Trams are due to start running to Chorlton from spring 2011 after transport bosses shook hands on a deal to build three new Metrolink lines.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive has appointed M-Pact Thales to design, build and maintain the new lines as part of a £575 million project.
The new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside and Chorlton in South Manchester will nearly double the size of the Metrolink network.
The Department for Transport gave its final approval for the project last month, and construction work is due to start early next year.
M-Pact Thales will also build a new quarter of a mile extension to MediaCity:UK in Salford Quays if the project is approved by the government.
The 1.7-mile (2.7 km) extension to Chorlton will be built on a section of disused railway line between Trafford Bar and St Werburgh's Road. New stops will be constructed at Firswood, Chorlton and St Werburgh's Road, and a tram depot will also be built at Trafford Bar. The line is due to open to trams in spring 2011.
