Reading opens new horizons for library group

Whether it's being able to read labels at the supermarket or understanding the TV guide, a readers group has been helping to make a real difference to the lives of people with learning difficulties, opening new horizons.

Sale-based charity Stockdales has been running the group, which meets weekly at Coppice Library, since September. It offers everything from group reading and word games to one-to-one sessions.

"We are here to help develop the literacy skills of members of the group and encourage them to read," said Jill Dobson. "They have come on in leaps and bounds since getting involved, which has a real impact on their confidence and empowers them in their day-to-day lives."

Take Avril Mellor for example. Thanks to the sessions, she is now able to read bus numbers, signs and labels on produce in the supermarket. Joanne Layfield can now read television guides and says she feels more 'confident' since joining the group.

And fellow member Angela Cubberley said: "Being part of the group has really improved my reading and made me feel more relaxed when I read. It's great to come along with my friends and get involved."

Stockdales provides many opportunities for people in the community with learning difficulties to improve their life skills by holding a wide range of classes from sports and cookery sessions and also running a social club, organising trips and weekend breaks.
