Commitment to a cleaner, greener borough
3 August 2007
Trafford Council is good at removing fly-tipping, fly-posting and graffiti according to the recent Local Environmental Quality Survey, carried out by ENCAMS (formerly the Tidy Britain Group).
However, the council needs to take action to target litter and improve the standard of roads, street furniture and litter bins in some areas.
The council is already working proactively with ENCAMS to produce an action plan to improve our borough's local environment.
In September, ENCAMS will be training four members of Trafford Council staff to carry out LEQ surveys so that the council can continually monitor what action is being taken and to make sure the improvements are effective.
Actions include:
• Running a smoking-related litter campaign
• Reviewing where litter bins are positioned in retail areas and replacing them with new style bins incorporating ashtrays
• Promoting the Junior Local Environment Officer scheme in schools
• Awarding Environmental Business standards to local shops and companies
• Further developing cleaning regimes and work practices to ensure that higher standards of cleanliness are achieved for local communities
• Funding increased from £2.3 million to £6.5 million per annum to tackle poor quality roads and footways
The council will be working closely with statutory bodies, housing associations and other major land owners, to achieve its aim of improving the environment in local areas.
Councillor June Reilly, executive member for environmental services, said: "The Local Environmental Quality Survey provides a comprehensive picture of how Trafford is performing on a range of measures contributing to, or affecting, environmental quality and cleanliness standards.
"It provides detailed management information that we can use to make sure our existing resources are targeting the areas with the greatest need. This reinforces our commitment to improving local communities, making Trafford a cleaner, greener borough."
