Preparations for the North West Substance Recovery Walk and Celebration are continuing in Trafford.

Trafford Recovery Forum supported by Trafford Council will take the lead on the event on Saturday, 15 September at Longford Park and Longford Park Athletics Club, Stretford (3pm-7pm)

The athletics track will be the focus for the day's main event, the celebration walk. With around 1500 people either in recovery from substance misuse, currently recovering or supporting someone expected to walk the track, it promises to be an extremely emotional and symbolic celebration for everyone involved.

Other afternoon highlights include the official launch of Trafford Recovery Forum, a live satellite link to Hartford, Connecticut, USA to join their 12th Recovery Walk, live bands, food and information stalls, children's entertainment and goodie bags, in fact something for everyone.

Executive Councillor Dr Karen Barclay said: "The importance of getting involved and supporting the growing numbers of North West people who are recovering from substance misuse can't be overemphasised.

"Substance misuse is something which affects us all one way or another. The council and everyone working with people with substance problems remain committed to ensuring effective help and support is available.

"All too often people say they couldn't possibly be affected by substance misuse. Our work with people from all walks of life who have a problem tells a very different story. It is all too easy to let a social glass of wine become half a bottle or more each night, or recreational drug use become a dependency, it doesn't take long for people to have a real problem.

"Once people find themselves in difficulties it is important they are able to quickly and easily gain the support, expertise and guidance they need to help them. In Trafford all those involved in substance misuse are committed to ensuring this help is available and this is why Trafford is acknowledged as having the North West's best Drug and Alcohol Services.

"I'd like to urge anyone who has been or is currently on the recovery journey to join in and celebrate their achievements with all the others recovering from substance misuse."

There are still opportunities available for people wanting to sponsor or contribute to this event, or host an information stand. All people need to do is e-mail karen.cooney@trafford.gov.uk or call 0161 912 3431.
