Trafford hosts North West in Bloom award ceremony

23 April 2004

Trafford is celebrating after it was announced that Lancashire County Cricket Club will be the venue for one of the North West's most prestigious awards ceremony - the 'North West in Bloom' awards, run by the Royal Horticultural Society. The event, which is a real coup for the club and Borough, will take place on Friday, 24 September.

Around 300 civic dignitaries and invited guests from as far afield as Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Cumbria will gather for the ceremonies, with many organisations and authorities hoping that their area 'sweeps' one of the prizes.

Lead Member for the Borough's 'Trafford in Bloom entry, Councillor Jane Baugh, said she was delighted that Lancashire County Cricket Club had been chosen for the ceremony, described as the North West's horticultural and environmental 'Oscar's'.

"People living in Trafford are extremely proud of their Borough and the enormous opportunities it offers to people not just living but visiting, studying and relaxing. We have excellent leisure, sporting and cultural facilities and I am really pleased that the excellent facilities offered at the cricket club have been recognised.

"To be able to showcase Trafford to so many people, for many of whom I am sure it will be the first time into the Borough is great. I am sure that with the RHS's organisation and the hospitality offered by the cricket cub, everyone involved will come away feeling that they have been part of an 'evening to remember'. Who knows, this may not be the last time the RHS chooses our Borough to host the evening," she said.

The RHS's Regional Organiser Eileen Averill said she was really looking forward to what promised to be a memorable ceremony.

"North West in Bloom is pleased to come to such a prestigious location as Lancashire County Cricket ground. This is the first time the awards ceremony has been held in Trafford. What better place is there for this year's winners to receive their awards that the ground which has been home to many famous sporting victories," she said.
