Chainsaw art comes to Victoria Park
19 May 2004
Victoria Park will soon be the home for three decorative totem poles, thanks to the Friends of Victoria Park securing funding from Stretford Area Board and the effort of distinguished chainsaw carver Mick Burns
The totem poles, which will be situated in the park's under fives play area, are the latest additions to the Borough's entry into this year's prestigious North West in Bloom competition and also support Victoria Park's efforts to secure Green Flag Award status this year.
Coordinator of the Trafford in Bloom entry Mark Brazil said he was delighted not only that the totem poles are being created, but that local school children have been given the chance to say what sculptural animals and other features they would like to see on them.
"To have Mick Burns creating these unusual, stunning works of art for the park is an enormous thrill for everyone involved. To know that local people and in particular young children who play in the park, have been able to influence what the finished totem poles look like just shows how everyone can get involved in their local environment.
"The poles will not only prove a focal and talking point, but will also give an added dimension and interest to play in the park. I can't think of a better way of really catching the imagination of young children as they play," he said.
The chainsaw carving of the poles will start tomorrow, 18 May and will be finished by Saturday 22 May.
