Trafford's largest park wildflower meadow

19 May 2004

There will be a further boost to Trafford's entry into the prestigious North West in Bloom competition this week when people living around Hullard Park in Old Trafford and park users will join Council officers in a community planting event.

The event, is the start of a project to create the Borough's largest park wildflower meadow, something which everyone involved is extremely excited about.

Coordinator of the Trafford in Bloom entry, Mark Brazil, said the wildflower meadow will not only add an extra special element to Hullard Park, but will also improve biodiversity by helping to attract wildlife such as birds, bees and butterflies to the area.

"Things are really hotting up now as the whole community gets behind our entry into this year's competition. This community planting is something that everyone is really enthusiastic about and I am sure that when the various cornfield flowers such as cornflowers, corn marigold and poppies begin to flower this year, they really will be a spectacle for everyone to enjoy.

"But that won't be the end of it, as by next summer the meadow will be blooming with ox eye daisies, wild carrot, meadow buttercups, yarrow and many other beautiful species, creating a feast of colour for visitors," he said.

Funding for the project has been secured from the Council and a local company who are also providing a driver and machinery to make the job easier for those planting the meadow.
