Windchimes from recycled rubbish

3 June 2004

Young people up to the age of 16 in Trafford will be putting their creative and practical skills to the test today (Thursday, 3 June) as they attempt to create the best windchime from recycled rubbish.

Their efforts are part of a competition organised by the Council and Manchester and District Housing as part of the Old Trafford in Bloom entry into this year's prestigious North West in Bloom competition.

As well as the Council, artists, other local agencies and several community groups are also taking part in what promises to be a hotly contested competition.

All the windchimes designed are to be judged by Hellal Bokta from Emerge and local artists Kate Egan and Donna Griffiths. The prize for the winner, as well as receiving sports gift vouchers, is pride of place for their winning design in Hullard Park.

As well as the windchimes, there will also be opportunities to make bat and bird boxes, all with the help of local wardens and volunteers, using tools from the wardens tool library.

Anyone interested in taking part should meet at Shrewsbury Street Centre where the competition will be held between 12.30pm and 6.30pm.
