North West in Bloom ceremony draws near
21 September 2004
As the host Borough for the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious North West in Bloom Awards Ceremony, being held at Lancashire County Cricket Club next Friday (24 September), you'd maybe expect nerves to be jangling a little by now. However for the organisers of the Borough's five entries into this year's competition, the tension is reaching fever pitch, as they know each of them has been nominated for an award.
Executive Member Councillor Paula Pearson said she was thrilled the entries - the Boroughwide entry in the Large City category, Altrincham's entries in the Large Town category, Sale's entry in the Small City Category, Old Trafford entry and Partington and Carrington in the Large Neighbourhood category - had been recognised.
"Since the first Boroughwide entry into the competition, the response we have had from local communities, voluntary groups, schools, individuals and other organisations has been terrific. Everyone seems to have welcomed the opportunity to showcase the Borough and work together to bring about real, sustainable improvements to local neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces as well as encourage important efforts such as increasing recycling.
"Last year everyone was delighted when Trafford in Bloom took the runners up spot in its category. To have not one or two but five superb entries nominated this year is thanks to the enormous effort, commitment and determination of everyone. None of this could have been achieved without the efforts of the many dedicated park's 'Friends' groups, local allotment societies, Council officers and the hundreds of people who have also worked hard to show their area off in its best light and the support of the Messenger newspaper group.
"Whatever the outcome of the ceremony itself, I would like to thank everyone who has worked so tirelessly over the previous months and in some cases years to improve and develop their areas. This recognition shows just what can be achieved when people work together for the good of the whole community and everyone involved should feel proud of their efforts," she said.
None of the representatives present from each of the entries will know until the announcements are made whether they have been successful. However, each and everyone one of them will attend knowing that their commitment has helped raise the profile of their area. They have all contributed to an enormous community effort which has seen streets improved, planting and green spaces brightened up and developed, improvements made to street furniture and the quality of facilities across Trafford. They have also helped increase recycling initiatives, tidy up and redevelop local beauty spots and historic sites and generally encourage people to be proud of their own small part of the Borough.
One thing is for sure, whatever the outcome of the awards ceremony, everyone involved has helped make sure that Trafford remains an attractive place where people want to live, work, study, visit and relax for many years to come.
