Seven of the Blooming Best for Trafford
30 September 2004
There were celebrations all round again last week as Trafford exceeded all expectations to secure seven awards in this year's prestigious Royal Horticultural Society's North West in Bloom competition.
At an awards ceremony held at Lancashire County Cricket Club, attended by over 300 North West delegates including the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mr Robert Hough, the Mayor of Trafford Councillor Mrs Pam Dixon welcomed everyone. Then, one by one Trafford representatives stepped forward to receive awards presented by Mr Hough.
As last year, the Boroughwide entry in the Large City category narrowly missed out on the top spot, being named 'runner up' to Stockport.
The Sale in Bloom entry went one better in securing the 'Small City' title for its submission, followed hot on the heeds by Altrincham, which took the second prize in the 'Large Town' category, before going one better and securing the prestigious 'Best Newcomer' award.
With Old Trafford and Partington and Carrington's entries securing fantastic 'Neighbourhood Awards' and Trafford Eco Park beating stiff opposition to take the 'Environment Award', it really was an afternoon of celebrations for everyone involved.
Executive Member Councillor Paula Pearson said this year's success was a credit to everyone involved.
"For the past two years the Council has reinforced the fact that it is not the Council entering the competition, but the whole Borough. Building on last year's achievements with more locally based entries has been extremely exciting. To see the enormous amount of effort made by individuals, local voluntary groups and businesses is something we have been delighted and extremely impressed with. To have achieved so much and secured so many awards this year just shows how, by working together, significant achievements can be made.
"I would like to give my personal thanks and congratulations to each and every person who has helped make this year another memorable one in the North West in Bloom awards. Working in partnership with local communities, groups and individuals has helped us bring about what are clearly fantastic, sustainable improvements to local environments and everyone should feel justifiably proud of their efforts and commitment. I would also like to thank The Messenger Group of Newspapers for their support of the Borough's entries into the competition, which has proved extremely important," she said.
Trafford in Bloom Coordinator Mark Brazil echoed the sentiments expressed by Councillor Pearson.
"For each of the entries to have achieved so much this year really is something everyone should be proud of. I am sure that this year's success will not only encourage those already involved to continue, but also get others thinking just what they could do in their area to support the Borough's future entries," he said.
It was not just about the regional awards though, the winners of the Borough's various local competitions also recently received their awards.
The 'Best Container' category winner was Mr CH Richardson from Raglan Drive, Timperley, who beat competition from runner up Mr R Jackson of Stretford, with the third place going to the Baskets and Tubs Club.
Mr R Jackson went one better in the 'Best Front Garden' category, taking first prize, closely followed by Mr H Bates of Stretford and another Stretford resident, Sheila McGlone, who took third prize.
Thorley Day Nursery of Timperley won the 'Best Commercial Frontage' category, with Goose Green Flowers runner up and Mr & Mrs Barry (Newsagent) of Altrincham taking third prize.
The Lennox Lea Hotel in Sale took the 'Best Hotel' prize and Flixton's Roebuck Hotel first prize in the 'Best Pub/Restaurant' prize from the Moss Trooper in Timperley and Altrincham's Wheatsheaf Coaching Inn.
