A Blooming success
12 October 2004
Following on from its great success at the North West in Bloom Ceremony, Trafford Council organised its own Trafford in Bloom Awards ceremony where it recognised the many achievements and efforts put in by local people to help make the Borough a much more attractive place for everyone.
This year saw the introduction of a number of Award schemes which local businesses, residents, schools and children could participate in.
The aim of the 'Greenspace 2004' project was to find out more about the quantity, quality and value of all of the parks, woodlands, playing fields and other green areas around Trafford, so that they can be protected, improved and promoted. There were 450 children from across the borough who provided valuable information and some impressive ideas for the future design of their local greenspaces. The winners of the schools' competition were particularly inspirational with their ideas. They were Dervish Mahad, Daniel Bartley, Laura Knowles, Abigail Hollingsworth, Shaun Van Straaten, Penny Silverwood, Samuel Fowler and Paul Jennings. The winners of the two £50 prizes relating to a boroughwide survey about greenspace usage were Liz Calcutt and Ms J Guthrie.
The Action for Nature Awards focused on helping the wildlife and the local environment and projects ranged from feeding birds in the garden to creating a nature area in the local park. The awards were open to Primary and secondary schools, local residents, Friends of Groups and Trafford Neighbourhood warden service across the whole Borough and each entrant received a certificate and wildlife gardening book.
The best entries from each area board were The Friends of Longford Park - Stretford, Oldfield Brow Primary School - Altrincham, Mrs Craxton - Sale and St Michael's Primary School - Urmston and were presented with their prizes on the night.
The Eco Business Award Scheme, launched this year in Urmston with the help of the Urmston Partnership, was set up to recognise those businesses who make the effort to manage and recycle their waste properly, enhance their shop frontage and show that they care about their local area. In addition, the Award scheme aims to share with local businesses examples of good practice and the many innovative ways there are to recycle or reuse business waste. The following 21 shops all qualified for an award: Aspen Travel, Bailey's Carpet Centre, Boots, Britannia Building Society, Cancer Research UK, Children's Chainstore Garments, Eddie McGrath Cycles, Fabrics of Chester, George Attenborough Shoes, Hampsons, Lazydayz, Partingtons, Quality Fresh Foods, R & L Printers, Room 16-30, Sarah Zain, Take a Break, The Dance Shop, The Gallery, The Winky Birds, Whittakers.
