Wildflower meadow seed planting

14 October 2004

Environmental improvements and planting work is now well established as part of the Borough's entries into this and previous year's prestigious North West in Bloom competitions. Thanks to the efforts of Raleigh Street resident Chris Beeby, local people in Stretford will soon be able to admire their very own wildflower meadow.

Chris was eager to find out ways of working with the Council through getting involved with Trafford in Bloom. After discussing various options, his idea of turning a long bland strip of mown grassland behind the houses on Raleigh Street, into a vibrant wildflower meadow soon began to turn from dream to reality.

This Saturday, 16 October, Raleigh Street residents will sow various wildflower seeds on the recently rotovated site, which will turn the land into a flamboyant mix of blue, red, yellow and white as early as next Summer. As well as creating a really attractive area, the wildflower meadow links into the Action for Nature in Trafford initiative, having even more significant advantages as it will encourage butterflies and insects to flourish and encourage birds and small mammals to a new home.

Nature Development Officer Lindsey Ralston said this was another excellent example of the local community creating their own green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

"This and the many other wildflower meadows which are being created across Trafford are having a significant impact on the attractiveness of local areas and at the same time are increasing the amount of wildlife and birds which are returning to the areas.

"It is thanks to the commitment shown by residents like Chris that these and other environmental schemes are being achieved. Everyone who has been involved in whatever way should be extremely proud that their effort and vision is helping make Trafford an even greener, more attractive area to live, work, relax and study," she said.

The local TOTAL garage has sponsored this wildflower meadow by paying for all the wildflower seeds to be planted on Saturday.
