Trafford in Bloom - Action for Nature challenge

6 April 2005

Residents, Businesses, schools and community groups are being encouraged to show off their green fingered talents and take part in this years Trafford in Bloom competitions and Action for Nature Awards.

B&Q Trafford Park are once again sponsoring the Trafford in Bloom competitions with vouchers for 1st 2nd and 3rd for the winners in the Best Front Garden and Container Display.

Steve Fowler, General Manager at B&Q Trafford Park said "The store is approaching its first birthday here in Trafford and supporting the Trafford in Bloom competitions is a good way to celebrate. B&Q Trafford Park is happy to support such a wonderful initiative to improve the environment and quality of life."

Mark Brazil, Trafford in Bloom Co-ordinator said " Last year we had a tremendous response to both the Trafford in Bloom competitions and the Action for Nature Awards and this year we are expecting an even bigger response. Front gardens, tubs and containers not only improve residential or Business frontage, but also can have a real positive impact on the whole community."

Trafford in Bloom will be holding five competitions, two of which are aimed at the public 'Best Front Garden' and 'Best Container Display'. There are three business categories, 'Best Commercial Frontage' 'Best Hotel' and 'Best Pub / Restaurant', entrants will be marked not only on colour of there floral display but also how they compost, recycle, and save water.

Action for Nature Awards aim is to raise awareness and knowledge of nature conservation, encouraging people to create new nature areas and improve existing ones. The criteria is simple, all you have to do, is show how? It does not matter how small or large the project is, these awards recognise the effort that is put in to improve wildlife and environment in Trafford.

Entrant's can be nominated for both the awards and competitions, so if you walk past a particular garden or business that brightens up your day, or know of a particular nature project, then now is the opportunity to nominate them, but don't forget to include your address.

Jo Cole Environment Manager from Parks and Countryside said " The judges for Action for Nature will be looking for the wow factor, the size of the project will not determine the success, but the thinking behind the project, the environmental benefit and value to the local wildlife, and landscape will determine the success."

Wyevale Garden Centres have kindly donated vouchers for this years winners and are pleased to support Action for Nature and help raise awareness of the campaign to improve wildlife and the environment in Trafford

Both of the competitions and the awards are free to enter and entry forms should be returned by close of business on the 4th July. Entry forms can be found at Trafford Direct or Libraries across the Borough. Alternatively phone 0161 912 5569 for Trafford in Bloom or 0161-912 5599 for Action for Nature.
