Take action for nature
18 May 2006
Calling all wildlife enthusiasts, if you have a wildlife area in your school, work place, local park or garden then you could be in with a chance of winning an Action for Nature award, as well as a very special prize.
Action for Nature 2006 is part of Trafford in Bloom and aims to recognise all those who have put aside time effort and space for wildlife in Trafford by creating wildlife gardens.
The entrants will be judged on sustainability, maintenance, encouraging wildlife and the use of wild plants in their nature projects. The winners will receive bronze, silver and gold awards along with an extra special garden gnome to display in their wildlife areas as a sign of the excellence they have achieved.
Entries are encouraged from friends of parks groups, community groups, schools with wildlife gardens, businesses and individuals who have ensured that there is space for wildlife in their gardens. Closing date 3 July 2006.
"Action for Nature in Trafford seeks to encourage the people of Trafford to help nature across the borough. Trafford's wildlife heritage is rich and diverse but will only stay that way with the peoples help. Those dedicated people who have created areas for wildlife deserve to be recognised, "said Executive Councillor June Reilly.
Last year out of thirteen excellent applicants two Schools achieved Gold Standard. Tyntesfield Junior School had managed to get not only their pupils involved in a mature onsite woodland but many of the schools parents had given up time and materials in its creation. The Judges where greatly impressed by how the school had managed to produce what in essence was a miniature Nature Reserve.
Davyhulme Infants and Junior School managed to turn a lawn area between school gardens into a wildlife and outdoor education area. The judges where very impressed by the innovative way the school pupils had been organized into small teams to help maintain the nature area and other sustainability themes.
The other overall winners were, in the individuals section Mrs Craxton with her excellent home wildlife garden, and in the groups section Old Trafford in Bloom entered Hullard Park with its new wildflower meadow.
