Celebrating World Environment Day

26 May 2006

A week long of activities and events will be taking place across the borough to coincide with World Environment Day (5 June) promoting the idea of protecting dry lands which cover more than 40 per cent of the planet's surface.

Prizes are up for grabs for the best design in the 'Bloomin Potty Day' being held in Hullard Park on 3 June between 11am-1pm. This forms part of the Old Trafford in Bloom entry supported by Manchester and District Housing. Participants will have an opportunity to decorate a plant pot using recyclable materials.

Residents are being invited to an outdoor 'get fit' exercise by helping to clear the Himalayan Balsam at Coroners Wood in Partington on 3 June between 10.30-1pm.

The Lostock Partnership, a community group will be getting their hands dirty on 5 June from 10am in a clean up to spruce up Lostock Park.

Free energy light saving bulbs will be given away at the sustainability roadshow educating people on how to be more sustainable and kinder to the planet on 5 June at the Atrincham Library.

People can also show their support by visiting any one of Trafford's 11 green flag parks by public transport, bike or foot instead of the car.

The Council is also supporting the Big Recycle, a national campaign being launched on 5 June to encourage the public to recycle more household waste.

World Environment Day brings together the message that our local actions have a global impact.

"We all have a responsibility to protect our environment and a few small actions by everyone can make a big difference. We hope the week long events will encourage more people to think about the impact our actions have on the environment," said Executive Councillor June Reilly.

"Everyone is being encouraged to use energy, water and other resources with care, reuse and recycle whenever you can, and make extra efforts to limit our pollution levels."

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues. It is celebrated each year on 5 June.
