It's Sainsbury's!
18 July 2006
Ask Developments and Trafford Borough Council have confirmed that supermarket operator Sainsbury's has been signed up to be the anchor store in the redevelopment of Urmston Shopping Centre.
A number of 'big name' supermarkets had been in the running to be Urmston's main food retail operator; however, the news of a deal with Sainsbury's was made official today by Ask and the Council.
Sainsbury's "food first" ethos was felt to be ideal for the Urmston store which is designated primarily as a food provider rather than a "sell everything megastore". This policy was specified by the Council and agreed by Ask in order to provide the right retail balance for Urmston.
Paul Miller, Sainsbury's Regional Development Surveyor, said:
"We are very excited by the prospect of a new Sainsbury's store in Urmston and delighted to have been chosen. At Sainsbury's we are very aware of the part we play in people's lives. Our stores are often the hub of local life and provide a place to socialise as well as to shop. We welcome the chance to bring our values to a partnership with Trafford MBC and Ask Developments in the regeneration of Urmston Town Centre."
Adam Higgins, Director at Ask Developments, said:
"The arrival of Sainsbury's in Urmston is fantastic news. At present, 62% of local shopping is leaking out of the area and being spent in other centres such as Sale and the Asda store on Trafford Retail Park. A new Sainsbury's will provide local shoppers with a wider and better choice and, therefore, a reason to put Urmston first on their shopping list."
Councillor Stephanie Poole, Executive Member at Trafford Borough Council said:
"It is fantastic news for Urmston that a new Sainsbury's will soon be servicing the area. Local residents will now be able to fulfil all their food shopping needs within Urmston, helping to revitalise the town centre and boost Urmston's economy."
The new supermarket is expected to begin trading in 2008 as part of Phase One of the scheme, alongside the new Urmston Library
