Environmental award winners announced
17 October 2006
Local residents, business, schools and community groups were celebrating when over fifty awards were handed out at this years environmental awards ceremony.
Presenting the awards at the ceremony (29 September), now in it's second year, Trafford's Mayor Viv Ward said everyone is to be commended for their efforts.
Executive Councillor Mrs June Reilly said: "These awards are a fantastic way to allow everyone to highlight their efforts as well as encouraging civic pride."
"I am delighted so many local people, community groups, schools and businesses have contributed to the borough's success at this year's north west in bloom competition."
"It is a credit to them all including all our council staff that the borough is cleaner and greener."
Awards were given out in the following categories:
Eco Schools Award winner - Woodheys School, Heyes Lane Junior School and Heyes Lane Infant School
Trafford in Bloom best front garden winner - Mr Jackson
Trafford in Bloom best container - Mr Richardson
Trafford in Bloom Best hotel - Lennox Lea
Trafford in Bloom Best Pub - Roebuck
Trafford in Bloom Best Commercial - Daydreams nursery
The Action for Nature awards are for helping wildlife and local environment and were awarded to schools, households and friends groups. This year Broadheath Primary School took the gold in the school category and Anne Michaelides in the household category. In the Friends group category Eric Galley from Friends of King George V Pool and Old Trafford in Bloom for Hullard Park took the gold.
Trafford Parks and Countryside's active citizenship project with Lostock College was shortlisted for the national Sustainable Communities Awards. It was commended as one of the top six projects in the Community Youth Initiative category. The project involved young people in park management, local democracy and partnership working with many organisations to improve Lostock Park as well as securing £113,000 of funding from the Fairshare Lottery Fund and Trafford Council.
National awards were also given out to the Friends of park groups who had achieved Green Flag status and to council staff who contributed to the success.
The event also made its own contribution to the environment. This year instead of paper, electronic invitations were sent out. In partnership with Red Rose Forest a fund has been set up to plant more trees and to make use of domestic renewable.
A tree was planted today in Flixton Park by school children and the Mayor donated to thank the Mayor and to celebrate the council's achievement in the Local Strategic Partnership environmental awards.
