Trafford Council takes stance against irresponsible dog owners

A Trafford Council campaign to take a stance against irresponsible dog owners who refuse to clean up dog mess has been relaunched.

The Council’s environmental health team has reintroduced its Bag it and Bin it campaign with the dark nights now here.

Dog owners are being told to bag and bin dog mess – or face an £80 on the spot fine or a possible prosecution.

Councillor Stephen Adshead, Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Climate Change, relaunched the campaign at Longford Park in Stretford.

Cllr Adshead said:

Some dog owners are allowing their dogs to foul under the cover of darkness and this will not be tolerated. While the majority of owners are responsible and pick up after their dog, a careless few are still giving dogs a bad name. We want to stamp out this anti-social behaviour.

If you are not picking up the dog mess you will be caught sooner or later. You will be fined £80 and, if you refuse to pay, could end up in court with a criminal record. We want to keep our public areas free of dog mess and are asking everyone to do their bit.

Allowing dogs to foul pavements, field and parks can also cause serious health problems – particularly for children. Toxocara is found in the faeces of dogs and cats and, if ingested, can cause serious sight problems.

The advice is simple, cleaning up after your dog is the only way of ensuring a winter free from the nuisance.

BAG IT AND BIN IT is an easy plan to follow...

BAG IT - Carefully turn the plastic bag inside out and your dogs’ mess will then be 'bagged'.

BIN IT - Dispose of your bag in a bin. Contrary to popular belief, dog waste can be put into a public litter bin if a specific dog waste bin is not provided.

The Council is also providing dog owners with a limited number of free dog bags and window posters to get them started. They are available from: Trafford Town Hall, Stretford Public Hall, Sale Waterside, Partington Healthy Living Centre and from the Mersey Valley Wardens in Sale Water Park.
