Budding Andy Murrays are being offered the chance of free professional tennis coaching in Trafford as part of a national campaign to encourage participation in the sport.
Tennis For Free, a national charity, has joined forces with several partners including Trafford Council to serve up the treat for residents. The aim is to get people of all ages to pick up a racquet and start playing the sport. All the equipment is provided and the coaching doesn’t cost a penny.
Coaches will be running sessions at John Leigh Park in Altrincham, Ashton Park in Sale, Stamford Park in Hale and Davyhulme Park in Urmston.
Cllr Judith Lloyd, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic initiative in Trafford. Tennis is a wonderful sport and we hope as many of our residents as possible take advantage of the chance for free professional coaching. Playing tennis is also an excellent way of keeping fit and healthy.”
John Willis, Tennis For Free’s North Regional Manager, said: "By having so many sessions we can attract young and old, those who work and those who don’t. We are truly reaching out to all sectors of the community. It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in the local area to try tennis for either the first time or to dust off the cobwebs and try again. You can bring your own racquet if you wish, but don’t worry all equipment is provided and, as the name suggests, everything is free!”
The Lawn Tennis Association’s Head of North Paul Bennett said: “We are very excited about the free activities being created for people to play tennis through the Tennis for Free programme. Having easy access to local good park facilities where you can play informally with your family and friends is really important in encouraging people to play.”
