Suicide prevention

Suicide is a major public health problem and it has a devastating impact on the individuals, families and communities that are bereaved or affected.

In Trafford, our aim is to prevent suicide and an important way to do that is by helping people who are experiencing suicidal feelings and those bereaved or affected by suicide.

Through implementing our Suicide Prevention Strategy, we aim to further create a supportive environment to live, learn and work and where people can receive support and advice when they need it.

Our vision

We are committed to making Trafford a place where suicide prevention is everyone’s business and where people don't feel like suicide is their only option.

We will create a supportive environment to live, learn and work and where people can receive support and advice when they need it.

We will take both a universal and targeted approach to suicide prevention, prioritising groups at high risk as well as ensuring a broad reach to all our residents.

We will collaborate with all our key partners across Trafford to achieve this ambition and reach out to the wider community to ask for their support as to how we develop and deliver on our plan.

Learn to save a life with free online training

We are asking residents of Trafford to take half an hour out of their day to complete free suicide prevention training.

Suicide Prevention Training from Zero Suicide Alliance is a free online training course which will help you to:

  • identify when someone is experiencing suicidal feelings
  • speak out in a supportive manner
  • signpost to the correct services or support

Suicide is preventable and there are many free and easy ways to access support, for yourself and for people you have concerns about.

For support for people experiencing suicidal feelings if you are concerned about someone, or if you are bereaved by suicide please visit the Shining a Light on Suicide website.

Shining a Light on Suicide

Greater Manchester’s Shining A Light On Suicide campaign brings suicide to the forefront of our minds. It aims to encourage everyone to talk about suicide in an honest, open, and direct way, so no one sees suicide as a solution to their problems.

Whatever you’re going through, we’ll help you get the advice and support you need.
