Supporting People

What is Supporting People?

The Supporting People programme offers vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment which enable greater independence.

Supporting People delivers high quality and strategically planned housing-related services which are cost effective and reliable and complement existing care services. The planning and development of services are needs led. Supporting People is a working partnership of local government, service users and support agencies.

What is housing related support?

Who can Supporting People help?

Supporting People services can help people with a wide variety of support needs, including:

  • people with a learning, physical or sensory disability
  • people with mental health problems
  • older people with support needs
  • homeless people with support needs
  • young people at risk or leaving care
  • teenage parents
  • women at risk of domestic violence
  • people who misuse drugs or alcohol
  • ex-offenders
  • refugees

This is only a small sample of people who may be eligible (entitled) to support. Check our full list to see if you are eligible

How can Supporting People Services be accessed?

Each service has different arrangements. There are 3 ways to access services, these are:

  • Referral by a statutory agency - e.g. a social worker, health worker, probation officer.
  • Referral by a non statutory agency - e.g. Youth Service, Age Concern, Future Visions
  • Self referral - where a person contacts the scheme/housing organisation directly

To find out how to access a particular service, please contact the provider directly. A Local directory of Supporting People Services and Directory of Services for People aged 50 are available for download.

The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) website has a national directory of all Supporting People services

Who pays for the support?

Supporting People Services are free for most people. Our fairer charging leaflet provides more information.
