Trafford has an extensive network of footpath, bridleways and canal towpaths that provide excellent walking routes away from busy roads and traffic. There are also a large number of pedestrian crossings and subways to assist with crossing roads.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a national route stretching across Northern England. Starting in Southport on the West Coast, the trail goes through Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester, all the way to Hull and Hornsea on the East Coast. The section of the trail passing through Trafford is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

The Bridgewater Canal runs from Runcorn, through Cheshire, Trafford and Salford to Leigh. Recent improvements to the canal towpath have created the Bridgewater Way, which has a section running through the heart of Trafford from Stretford to Sale. Upgrades include signage, improved access points, information and seating areas and a resurfaced towpath, opening up the route to walkers and cyclists.

A variety of pedestrian crossings are in place across the borough. These include Pelican, Puffin, Toucan, Zebra and Pegasus crossings. All these crossings are slightly different but are all designed to help pedestrians, cyclists or equestrians cross busy roads.
