Food premises registration

Registration of premises used for a food business (including market stalls, delivery vehicles and other moveable structures) is required by law. Registration will allow Trafford Council to keep an up-to-date list of all those premises in their area so they can visit them when they need to. The frequency of the visits will depend on the degree of risk involved.

Who needs to register?

If you run a food business in Trafford, you must tell us about any premises you use for storing, selling, distributing or preparing food. Food premises include restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops supermarkets, staff canteens, kitchens in offices, warehouses, guest houses, delivery vehicles, buffet cars on trains, market and other stalls, hot dog and ice cream vans etc.

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by the local authority or the Meat Hygiene Service, rather than be registered. If you are uncertain whether your business needs to be approved or registered, contact us.

Is this your first food business?

Childminders Exemption from Registration

From 1 January 2014 childminders who provide food as part of their childminding service, do not need to register separately as a food business with your local authority. This will happen automatically when they register with Ofsted.

How to Register

You can register your food business online.

Once you have registered you only need to notify us if the business closes, of a change of food business operator, or if the nature of the business changes. The new food business operator will have to complete an application form.

What happens next?

Once you have submitted your application form your details will be placed on the register and we will acknowledge receipt within 14 days.
